Earthquake strikes off coast of Alaska with tsunami warnings for Alaska and Canada and tsunami watch

AN EARTHQUAKE with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2 struck near the coast of Alaska with a tsunami warning in place.

The quake hit 256km southeast of Chiniak, on the southern Alaskan coast, at a depth of 10km, the US Geological Survey says.

The quake prompted a tsunami warning for parts of Alaska and Canada and a tsunami watch for the entire US west coast and Hawaii. While the tsunami watch is still in place for Washington state and California, NWS Honolulu has cancelled its tsunami watch for Hawaii.
