A TEENAGE boy and a young woman have drowned while swimming in a dam on a rural Queensland property as part of Australia Day celebrations.
Police were called to a property at Julatten, about 25km southwest of Port Douglas, yesterday afternoon after reports a 15-year-old boy had drowned and a 23-year-old woman was missing in the dam.
A police spokesman said officers attended the property, at Mossman Mount Molloy Rd, about 4pm and found the 23-year-old woman in the dam a short time later.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts to revive them.
A witness at the Australia Day party, which was attended by at least a dozen people, said it “was hard to watch” as paramedics worked to resuscitate his friends.
It is believed the two had been using a slide, which was set up on the dam’s edge, to enter the water.
