An emergency warning has been downgraded for a fire burning near the South West WA town of Augusta after conditions there eased overnight and the spread of the blaze slowed.
Windy conditions had hampered firefighting efforts in the town, about 300 kilometres south of Perth, where a fire started near the Bussell Highway and the Westbay Retreat Caravan Park yesterday.
The fire is burning on both sides of Bussell Highway in paddocks and moving in a northerly direction.
Evacuation centres at the Centennial Hall on Blackwood Avenue and the Margaret River Cultural and Recreation Centre have now been closed.
But a number of roads remain closed, including Caves Road from Stockdill Road to Bussell Highway is closed in both directions.
While the fire has moving away from town, there had been a number of properties in its path.
The fire has burned at least 80 hectares of land, and there have been up to 80 firefighters on the ground battling the blaze.
