Australia out of Davis Cup after Nick Kyrgios loses to Alexander Zverev

Nick Kyrgios walks off the court with a broken racquet.Australia has been bundled out of the Davis Cup after Nick Kyrgios was thrashed in straight sets by world number five Alexander Zverev, giving Germany an unbeatable 3-1 lead.

World number 14 Kyrgios looked frustrated from the outset today and required a second set medical time-out for his right arm before succumbing 6-2 7-6 (7/3) 6-2 at Brisbane’s Pat Rafter Arena.

Australia has now been relegated to September’s World Group play-offs, while Germany moves through to April’s quarter-finals against either Great Britain or Spain.

The final reverse singles rubber set to feature Australian number two Alex de Minaur against Jan-Lennard Struff was abandoned after Germany sealed the win.
