One in six trees lost in WA’s concrete jungle suburbs

Where have the Doubleview trees gone?ONE in every six big trees has been cut down in some Perth suburbs in the past five years, sparking a warning about “alarming” tree canopy loss across the metropolitan area.

It has prompted a swag of local governments in WA to take a fresh look at their planning laws, with some councils forcing homeowners to retain some trees or pay for verge trees and others considering a requirement for the owner to plant a new tree for every one they cut down.

A City of Stirling report into canopy cover shows more than 15 per cent or one in every six significant trees on private and public land in the suburbs of Scarborough and Nollamara has fallen to chainsaws since 2012.

Other suburbs, including Doubleview, Westminster, Balga and Innaloo in Perth’s biggest council, have lost one in eight trees.
