A red car torn almost in half in front of a tree.

A 16-year-old boy has been killed after a high-speed police pursuit ended with a car slamming into a tree and splitting in two at Hovea, 30 kilometres east of Perth.

Police said a car carrying three people failed to stop for officers before the driver lost control and crashed into the tree at high speed on Great Eastern Highway just before 6:00pm on Thursday.

The teenage driver died at the scene.

The passengers, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries.

The woman was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital by the rescue helicopter while the boy was taken to the same hospital under priority by ambulance.

Police said it took several hours to free the trapped 16-year-old passenger from the wreckage, and he is being treated for serious leg and spinal injuries.
