IT is unusual that Luke Rockhold and Yoel Romero have not crossed paths until now.
Two of the most complete fighters on the planet, they are entrenched at the top of the UFC’s middleweight division.
MMA fans have wanted to see this fight since both men were signed to the UFC in 2013.
Five years and a combined 17 fights later, it is finally happening.
Rockhold (16-3) and Romero (12-2) will clash for the first time in the main event of UFC 221 at Perth Arena tomorrow.
The prize? An interim UFC title — and more importantly, a showdown with Australia’s first UFC champion, Robert Whittaker.
Whittaker, who is coming off a win over Romero, was forced to withdraw from the Perth event last month because of poor health.
The silver lining was that he was with his wife for the birth of their first child this week.
Romero seized the opportunity to step into a title fight and Rockhold seems to have taken the change of plans in his stride.
