Stoneman Douglas High School is one of the biggest schools in the county
Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie told local media there were “numerous fatalities” at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, about 72 kilometres north of Miami.
“It’s a horrific situation. It’s just a horrible day for us,” Mr Runcie said.
An anonymous federal official has identified the suspect as 18-year-old former student Nicolas Cruz, AP reports.
Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
“He was taken into custody, I believe, about an hour after he left Stoneman Douglas, after he committed this horrific homicidal, detestable act,” Sheriff Israel said.
“There are folks that have lost their lives. I don’t know the number right now. It’s a fluid scene right now.”
