Knife-wielding attacker severed wife’s breast, cut arteries

A head shot of a smiling Veronique Thomas Smith. A “self-absorbed” man has been sentenced to 19 years’ jail for what a judge described as a “chilling, horrendous” and “merciless” knife attack on his estranged wife and her male friend in her Geraldton home.

Lennie Smith, 39, was angry his wife Veronique Thomas-Smith had left their three children with him on the night of November 30, 2016, so he armed himself with three knives and told his young son he was “going to kill your mum” and went to her Bluff Point home.

Despite her having a violence restraining order against him, Smith smashed a window to get inside where Ms Thomas-Smith, 36, and her friend Kris Battilana, 33, were sleeping.

The Supreme Court was told when Smith was confronted by Mr Battilana, he used the knives to strike him in the face and neck before turning his attention to Ms Thomas-Smith who was hit in the neck, body and legs.
