The car caught alight in the car park just before 9.30am, with one man in his 40s quick to use a nearby garden hose to keep the fire contained before firefighters arrived.

Bystander Lisa Wilson said the car’s elderly driver appeared shaken.

β€œHe still had his bags in his hands and the door was open so we think maybe he got in and something happened and he jumped out,” she said.

Mrs Wilson praised the brave actions of shoppers who took charge to minimise the risk posed.

β€œI think the biggest risk was to the house just behind and everyone was obviously concerned if there was anyone was in there and people were running around to check that they weren’t,” she said.

β€œI also saw another guy jump round the fence and get the hose from that house, making sure the flames weren’t getting too close.”
