WA couple use sandbags to beat the mortgage trap; $35,000 Total

ON a rural property south of Perth, an unconventional home is rising from the ground. It is a house made from bags of dirt. And it’s dirt cheap. The home is being built in Kendenup, just north of Mount Barker in the Great Southern.

Kate and Scott Ryan-Taylor bought 11 hectares for $125,000, but the idea of paying off a house made them shudder. So, they started researching do-it-yourself, dome-shaped homes made from earth bags.

These earth bag homes have been around since last century in third world countries and earthquake prone areas but they’re still relatively new in Australia.

Kate and Scott Ryan-Taylor say their home is under budget.
