Alan Alda: MASH star reveals he has Parkinson’s disease

American actor Alan Alda, who is best known for playing Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce in the television series MASH, has revealed he has Parkinson’s disease.Appearing on CBS This Morning, Alda said he was making his condition public to reassure those with the illness that it is possible to stay active.

“The thing I want folks to know, and this is not to short change people who are suffering with really bad symptoms, but in the very beginning to be immobilised by fear and think the worst thing has happened to you, it hasn’t happened to you, there are still things you can do,” Alda said.

Alda said he was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disorder three-and-a-half years ago.The 82-year-old said he has acted and given talks since then.He said he could see his thumb twitch in recent interviews and thought it was time to reveal the disorder.
