Avon Descent 2018: Recent rains puts whitewater race records under threat

AVON Descent records are under threat after the recent heavy rain swelled river levels to their highest in a decade.

Gumboot-clad spectators braved knee-deep floodwaters at Extracts Weir as โ€œfast and furiousโ€ conditions tested the skill of participants.

More than 50mm of rain since Wednesday night meant the eventโ€™s start had its share of thrills and spills, with one relay team splitting their kayak in two pieces on rocks while attempting to cross the weir.

Race director John King said 2018 was one of the quickest races in years and he hoped the conditions would encourage more competitors to sign-up next year.
