Another strong quake hits Indonesia’s Lombok, witnesses say buildings have collapsed

An earthquake measured at magnitude-5.9 hits Indonesia’s Lombok island, the third big quake in little over a week, as an official says the death has topped 220.

People ran onto roads in panic and buildings were damaged by the magnitude-5.9 quake, causing more “trauma,” said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Buildings still standing on the island have been weakened after Sunday’s 6.9 quake that killed at least 227 people and a 6.4 quake on July 29 that killed 16.

The governor of the province that includes Lombok where the quake was centred, the military, the national search and rescue agency and regent of North Lombok all issued different death tolls for Sunday’s earthquake that ranged from 227 to 381.
