TRAFFIC on the Mitchell Freeway is blocked after a truck crashed into an overpass near the CBD this morning.
Centre lanes of the freeway southbound have been blocked under the Hay Street overpass and workers are scrambling to fix stray pieces of metal left exposed from the crash.
A sea container, which was understood to have been on the back of the truck, was on its side on the road. Parts of the bridge are strewn over the freeway and a steel reinforcing bar is hanging from the overpass.
Firefighters are using a cherry picker to try and remove the metal.
Main Roads staff are at the scene assessing the bridge’s structure.
Traffic is heavy in the area and Main Roads has urged motorists to consider taking an alternative route.
